We would like to clarify some information regarding the construction of the railroad between Cedarburg and Menasha. Up to now, our Prototype Railroad page has stated, “In 1871, 79 miles of track were laid from Cedarburg to Hilbert Junction, Wis., and from there to Menasha, Wis. (the Menasha Branch).” That statement, gleaned from several historic references, is an over simplification of the facts and could cause some confusion. While some of the work commenced in 1871, the last rails along the main line were spiked down in November of 1872. We consider the line completed in 1872, when regular trains started running. However, the line wasn’t officially declared complete until February of 1873.
